Orrville City Schools is helping students make two important school transitions with confidence through orientation experiences focused on relationships, teamwork, and student mentorship.

At Orrville High School, incoming freshmen participated in Freshmen Orientation Boot Camp, where they met with upperclass student mentors and began learning what to expect as they start their high school experience. Students worked in mentor groups, participated in a scavenger hunt throughout the building, and had opportunities to ask questions, meet classmates, and become more familiar with OHS.

The upperclass mentors played an important role in the experience by welcoming the freshmen, sharing their own perspectives, and helping students feel more comfortable as they prepare for the transition to high school. Building those connections before the first day of classes gives freshmen familiar faces they can turn to as the school year begins.

At Orrville Middle School, incoming fifth-grade students participated in Day 1 of Jumpstart Boot Camp with support from seventh- and eighth-grade student mentors.

Students took part in cooperation and team-building activities designed to strengthen communication, problem-solving, and new friendships. They also participated in an Ignite lesson, which gave students another opportunity to connect with their mentors while learning about the culture and expectations of Orrville Middle School.

The day concluded with an important rite of passage for new middle school students—locker practice. Students worked on opening their lockers and becoming more comfortable navigating their new school environment.

Although the activities at OHS and OMS looked a little different, the purpose was the same: to make sure students enter a new building already feeling welcomed, supported, and connected.

Student mentors are a key part of that effort. Our seventh-, eighth-, and upperclass students are able to provide something especially meaningful to younger students—encouragement from someone who has recently experienced the same transition.

Orrville City Schools appreciates the students and staff who helped make both orientation programs possible. Their work is helping our newest middle and high school Red Riders begin the year with greater confidence and a stronger sense of belonging.

Welcome to OMS and OHS, Red Riders. We are excited for a great school year!
